About Us
The Performing Unit of Kathak Rhythms, under the direction of Guru Akhila Rao, uses the classical Indian dance form as a method for artistic and cultural engagement and discovery. Traditionally attributed to the traveling bards of ancient northern India known as Kathakars or storytellers, Kathak gained refinement and complexity in technique and aesthetics over two millennia. Kathak Rhythms' presentations range from traditional to contemporary themes while maintaining the purity of the dance form.
Company dancers have toured across the US (11 states), presenting before diverse audiences in size and demographics. The dancers have each trained under our Director or over 10-20 years to a structured course affiliated with reputed institutes of Indian classical dance and music in the US and India leading to an undergraduate degree (Visharad). Our dancers are currently in pursuit of a master's degree (Alankaar) while continuing to refine their performance aesthetics as well as teaching students of all ages.
The company offers solo concerts, mini-performances, and full-length dance-theater productions set to live music accompaniment or recorded music tailored to fit a wide range of audiences, budgets, and time limits. Lecture-demonstration-workshops introduce participants to basic body movements, traditional gestures for storytelling, and musical mathematics.
With traditional, contemporary and diverse collaborative works, the dance company is known to capture the hearts of all audiences.
Our performing unit was accepted into the Texas Touring Roster by the Texas Commission on the Arts for 2024-2026.
